Was Fred Phelps a champion for gay rights?

It's possible that no one in America is more hated than Fred Phelps and his over the top cult known as the Westboro Baptist Church.  If that name doesn't ring a bell, it's the "God hates Fags" guys who picket funerals of soldiers and generally trololo hardcore in real life.  But, are they perhaps responsible for the advance of gay rights, albeit in a very small way?

I've heard it said that they are nothing but litigation trolls, and while that's true to some extent, leaked footage of one of their "church" services seems to indicate that they are true believers.  Believers in what, I'm not sure.  So how could a group so overflowing with seething hatred actually benefit the equal rights movement?

How many people saw these clowns at some point in time and at least subconsciously thought "Wow, these people are fucking insane.  They in no way reflect my views or values."?  It's like that "scared straight" show they used to run about prison life.  No one wants to become THAT.
